Over 35 people with aphasia attended an event to inspire ideas, motivation and inspiration for getting back to life and moving on again after stroke and aphasia. The event was held to celebrate the awareness raising 346 mile David Robins 'Get Connected' walk which ended in Barnstaple on 18th May.
People with aphasia heard from Robin Lamerton and Eddie Scott who told their moving stories about their experiences of getting back to work through volunteering and trying new activities and interests. Hearing true-life experiences and sharing feelings is very powerful but also very motivating. As Mary Langley said, who attended with husband John who had his stroke in December, 'it has given us both great encouragement and enthusiasm. and has given him some idea of what strong will and determination can achieve'.

The event coincided with the recent Aphasia Alliance Awareness Raising campaign. ITV West Country News attended the event and interviewed Carole Pound, spokesperson for the Aphasia Alliance. 'There are 250,000 people with aphasia in the UK', she said, 'but still we find people haven't heard about this 'hidden' disability and they don't know what to do when they encounter it'.
