Working with people who have communication difficulties can be challenging for both you and the person who has the communication impairment. This day will give you a greater understanding of what it's like to live with a communication disability. It will offer you practical suggestions to deal with the challenges you face in your day to day work role. Though this training focuses on people who have had a stroke, the ideas and techniques you will gain can be used with a wide range of people with communication disabilities in a variety of settings. By the end of the course you'll be inspired to have more conversations, more involvement and more fun with people who have difficulty talking.

 

Who is the course for?

Anyone who wishes to enhance their practical communication skills.  This might include care workers, counsellors, dieticians, doctors, information officers, nurses, occupational therapists, PALS officers, physiotherapists, psychologists, rehabilitation assistants, social workers, speech and language therapists.

 

What will you gain from attending the course?

  • You will have increased knowledge of the issues and challenges that face people who have communication disability.
  • You will be able to use new techniques to communicate effectively and compassionately with people with communication disability – practical tips for use in your own setting.
  • You will gain practical tips for having productive enjoyable conversations with people who have difficulty talking.
  • You will have increased awareness and skills to change your working environment and practices to make them accessible to people who have communication disability.
